Ukraine’s place on the global economic map and how to make it better

9/2/2016

An outside point of view on the place and role of our country in the global economy will be one of the most burning topics of the third Kyiv International Economic Forum (KIEF) to be held on October 6-7, 2016.

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe by territory and the fifth largest by population. Despite such powerful demographic and geographic potential, deindustrialization is taking place in Ukraine. Extensive agriculture and supply of other commodities make up a significant part of Ukraine’s GDP. Despite constant growth in IT and other and areas of economy, its structure is deteriorating. Moreover, in Ukraine there are two diametrically opposed inside views on the country’s role in the political and economic life of the world. They are often overly critical or, on the contrary – overly positive, oriented at an uninformed person. So what is the actual role of Ukraine in the global division of labor? In which direction is it changing? This issue will be considered at the panel discussion “Ukraine on the Global Economic Map”, which will feature the Ambassadors of the USA, Canada, Israel and Turkey.

The second day of KIEF 2016 will focus on attracting investment to Ukraine, international cooperation, investment and trade. Numerous political discussions on Ukraine’s European integration determine a required and professional conversation with European partners on the one hand and prominent Ukrainian economists and business representatives on the other hand. What are the fastest ways for Ukraine to integrate into the European economic area? Is it a panacea to overcome the crisis? What are European standards like? What is competitiveness of the domestic economy and prospects for its further development? What are the main gaps of the Ukrainian legislation? What are expectations of our Western partners? The answers to all these questions will be given during a discussion on the topic “International Cooperation: Ukraine — Europe”.

To apply the experience of other countries is a good idea to change the trajectory of the states that are lagging behind. Such attempts usually have emulating nature: to use the most effective methods and avoid mistakes made by others. Geographically, culturally and certainly mentally, Ukraine is a European country. However, it makes sense to consider the experience of non-European countries, such as Asian ones, both those that are successful and those that have recently embarked on the path of development. Overall, the Asian vector does not exclude but rather amplify Western direction of our global cooperation. To build a strong partnership with the East is the most important prospect for the modern Ukraine. The list of specific objectives is as follows: to promote domestic technologies, to struggle for Ukraine’s agricultural and industrial market, to promote Ukrainian education. Ukrainian specialists are primarily interested in the experience of innovative development of many Asian countries. How and why they did it? During the panel discussion “International Cooperation: Ukraine — Asia”, this issue and other ones will be considered by leading economic experts such as Angel Investor and Mentor at Chinaccelerator Singh Manmeet, Vice-president of one of China’s leading construction and investment companies – Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co., Ltd. Zhang Zhonghua, Deputy Secretary General of the Cooperation Council of the Turkic Speaking States (Turkic Council) Ömer Kocaman and the CEO of ICC Ukraine International Business Cooperation Center in the Persian Gulf States Yuriy Sydorov.

In general, the third KIEF will bring together several dozen leading foreign and Ukrainian economists, reformers, businessmen and government officials, including experts from countries, whose experience of economic transformation can be useful for Ukraine.
